The human eye filters in patterns of light and the brain translates the patterns into meaning. The area we can see in sharp detail is narrow while visual information in our periphery is often understood inferentially. How much of perception is direct and active and how much is inferential and passive?
Lim uses distance and scale, gestalt and reduction, lightness and darkness, and focus and depth to illustrate how our perceptual processes distort and obscure raw visual information into what we see.
